With all due respect to each coach I’ve covered in my young journalism career, Illinois State men’s basketball coach Tim Jankovich is the most quotable.
So much so, his quote has inspired the name and tagline of my very own blog.
After the Redbirds lost an overtime thriller to Northern Iowa in the 2009 Missouri Valley Conference championship game, making it two straight title game losses for ISU, Jankovich was asked what he told the team to keep its spirits up after another year of being so close without anything to show for it.
“I didn’t say anything because I was searching for profound, and come to find out, there was no profound today.”
Like Jankovich, yours truly is always on the hunt for the profound.
My name is Luis C. Medina. I am a freelance sports writer for Bolingbrook and Romeoville’s Patch.com websites in suburban Chicago. Prior to my stint in the suburbs, I served a year as the sports editor at the Harrisburg Daily Register/Eldorado Daily Journal in southeastern Illinois. I attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale, graduated with a B.S. in Journalism in 2009 and am proud to say I wouldn’t trade my five year collegiate experience for anything.
(If you’re curious, I’m the guy in the banner pic above.)
As a sports writer, I’m the type to stray off the well-beaten path. I enjoy digging for a different angle. Learning about something by using a different kind of analytical process is something I welcome with open arms.
My hope is that with this site, I can provide my readers with what I see and potential employers a perspective of what I could bring to the team.
Welcome to my world.
Go ahead. Make yourself comfortable.
